That light and darkness is expressed in many different ways in the varying life forms on our planet. These are creature types but they also represent three sides that you can take in the game. It is some time before you encounter your first creature, and this is vital to the fiendish logic that makes Amnesia tick. We as humans seem to be the only creatures which are out of balance with this natural duality. She loves the characters from her writing, has always loved mystical and fantasy creatures, they are like old friends who come alive on the pages.
